Introduction to the Gratiot County Baseball League

A league in Gratiot County has been in existence as early as 1928, though no official date can be determined.  The current GCBL aligns itself to a 1945 start date.  It has been titled multiple ways, including the Gratiot County League, the Gratiot Mens League, and the Gratiot County Mens Baseball League to name a few.  In 2001, it took the name of Gratiot County Mid-Michigan Baseball League, before going back to its origin, the Gratiot County Baseball League by a vote of the participating teams for the 2004 season.

As of the 2007 season, there are twelve teams competing in the league, though in certain stages of its existence there have been as many as eighteen teams.  In the early days of the GCBL, teams from bergs such as North Star, Bannister and Sumner all had teams in the league.  As the boundaries grew, so did the league in accommodating teams from outside of the Gratiot County lines.  Teams from Crawford, Mt. Pleasant and Marion Springs added to the numbers as well as the season schedule.

Historically, the league would start its season as early as the second week of April ending as late as the last weekend in October.  As the team participation dwindled so did the schedule.  To the west of the Gratiot League was the Tri-County league, a league with which the Gratiot County League held a regular all-star game.  In the late eighties, that league began to collapse, and teams such as Fulton and Ionia were added to the Gratiot County League.  It was at that time that the current schedule came into existence, starting around the second Sunday in May and ending with the league playoff championship game the last Sunday in August.

Games are played as double-headers or single nine-inning affairs depending on the schedule and date.  Most games are held on Sundays, though teams can opt to play on different dates with league approval.  The games are held in a variety of locations that include both high school diamonds as well as township and county parks.

Outside of its regular schedule, the GCBL engages in a season ending tournament held over Labor Day weekend in Sidney, Michigan.  One of the highlights of the season is the annual hog roast held at Lumberjack Park in Riverdale, where two teams square off in a Saturday double-header with the rest of the league in attendance to share in the excitement. In years past, the league has also hosted all-star games, both within the league and against other leagues in the area.

Through wartime and depression, economic booms and natural disasters, one thing has remained a constant: baseball.  In the central Michigan area, the GCBL is synonymous with the American pastime.  For more than 75 years, the league has blossomed, busted and built itself up again to remain one of the elite organizations for baseball in Michigan.
